The Department of Anaesthesiology provides a wide range of services including anaesthesia for Paediatric Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Thoracic surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as for all other surgical specialties in this hospital. The Department also provides coverage of the Intensive Care Units, both medical and surgical, cover for critically ill patients who need to be transported for imaging and interhospital transfer, cover for the Code Blue services of the Hospital, and anaesthesia for out of the operation theatre locations including endoscopy services and sedation for procedures under radiological imaging. The Department also provides acute and chronic pain services. An increasing number of surgeries are now being conducted under ultrasound guided peripheral nerve blocks, which aids in quicker shift outs from the Operation Theatre following surgery. The Pre Anaesthetic Clinic provides assessment, optimisation and counselling for patients who are scheduled for surgical procedures under anaesthesia. The Department also conducts a three year post graduate course in Anaesthesiology under the aegis of the National Board for Examination, with a robust academic program.
